Studies / Spice storage
Ways we looked at to get the spices off the low BPP9 pull-out, on v0.1.15. None of these was adopted: v0.1.15 and v0.2.2 now use a DB18 4DWR with SDIAK18 spice drawer inserts beside the cooking instead (see the layouts and talking points). A, the drop-down: a W1542 upper (15 × 42 in, flush to the ceiling like the other uppers) to the right of the hood, against the fridge return. The bottom 10 in of the box is a spice rack on vertical slides: pull the tab under the cabinet and the rack drops straight down 10 in, with no door to open first. The door above covers two shelves for the large containers. B and C are the other options we looked at: B, an 18 in upper with an off-the-shelf pull-down rack (door has to open first, and it only fits left of the hood); C, a 6 in deep cabinet standing on the counter against the fridge return with a door that folds back onto the backsplash.

A: drop-down spice box, parts
- Cabinet: Waypoint W1542, 580F in the upper finish, hinged on the fridge-return side. It goes between the hood and the fridge return: 15 in of the 17⅞ in there, leaving 2⅞ in to the hood's flared bottom. Bottom at 54 in, top at the ceiling.
- Field change: the remodeler or a cabinet shop removes the cabinet's fixed bottom so the rack's own bottom closes the box. A fixed shelf about 10¾ in up becomes the top of the rack space. Ask whether that cut affects Waypoint's warranty.
- Rack: custom maple box about 12½ in wide × 10¼ in deep × 10 in tall, open at the front and top. Three stepped tiers, front lowest, each about 2⅜ in higher than the one in front, with a lip on each. Six 4 oz jars (1⅞ in round) per tier, 18 in all.
- Slides: two 10 in full-extension ball-bearing slides mounted vertically on the cabinet sides, behind the face frame. Use slides rated for vertical mounting; drawer slides lose load rating on their side.
- Counterbalance: a small gas spring or constant-force spring sized to a full rack (about 10 to 12 lb with glass jars), so it stays up on its own and lowers slowly. Soft stop at the bottom, push latch or magnet catch at the top.
- Pull: 3 in brushed gold tab on the rack's front edge, under the cabinet, matching the other tabs.
- Above the rack: the stock door and two adjustable shelves, about 32 in of height for the large containers.
A: notes
- Dropped, the rack hangs from 54 in down to about 44 in off the floor, 8 in above the counter, about 4¼ in north of the cooktop glass. Drop it, take what's needed and push it back up rather than leave it down beside a steaming pot.
- No off-the-shelf hardware drops a rack straight down out of an upper: Rev-A-Shelf 5PD and Kesseböhmer iMove swing down and forward, need 24 in and about 20 in boxes, and the door opens first. Dropout Cabinet Fixtures racks (5¼ in filler, 38 in or taller) come down and forward with the front attached, closest commercial option if the custom box is a problem.
- Check the hood maker's side clearance against the 2⅞ in gap.
- Frees the BPP9 beside the cooktop for oils and vinegars, or a tray pull-out.
B: 18 in upper with a pull-down rack, parts and notes
- Waypoint W1830, stock 12 in deep, left of the hood (the corner side), 2 in clear of the hood. On the right only a 15 in box fits, and a 15 in face frame leaves about 12 in of opening.
- Hardware Resources TTSPD-R 3-tier spice pull-down: 14 in wide × 109⁄16 in deep × 9⅝ in tall, needs a 13⅝ in opening, two brackets screwed to the cabinet floor. About 18 jars. Door opens first; the rack swings forward and down on its arms. Mount it about 1 in forward if it catches on the face-frame lip, use longer screws than the ½ in ones supplied.
C: cabinet on the counter, parts and notes
- Waypoint W1230 RD-6 (Reduced Depth to 6 in) standing on the quartz against the fridge return, door facing the cooktop, hinged at the wall. Opened 90° it lies on the backsplash and stops at the back corner of the cooktop glass, so 12 in is the widest door that works.
- Four shelves of 5 jars and an 8 in top shelf for 3 large containers.
- At 30 in tall the open door's top corner touches the hood's flared bottom where the hood is drawn (24½ in over the counter). Hang the hood at 30 in or use a 24 in tall W1224 RD-6 (one shelf fewer).
